Jackson Young Lawyers Presents What Trademarks Mean to College Sports
How can three schools use Pistol Pete as a mascot? How many Tigers are in the SEC? Why can’t Ole Miss stop people from selling Colonel Reb merchandise? Do I need a license for this T-shirt? Can my NIL deal require a player to wear their uniform? Do I have to pay Ohio State every time I use the word “The?”
Trademarks are how we understand the goods and services we buy. Big time college athletics is home to many of the biggest brands in the world. The issues these teams have with their own trademarks show us some of the considerations that businesses should make in adopting and policing their own trademarks.
Tupelo associate Andrew Coffman will provide understanding of the considerations colleges should make concerning their own trademarks, as well as trademark policies concerning NIL agreements in the discussion "What Trademarks Mean to College Sports" at the Jackson Young Lawyers CLE Luncheon, hosted at Char in Jackson, MS. More information can be found on the JYL website.
