LaToya Merritt Named in 2018 Mississippi Business Journal Leadership in Law Class

JACKSON, Miss. — The Mississippi Business Journal has recognized Phelps Partner LaToya Merritt among its class of 2018 Leaders in Law. Honorees are recognized as attorneys with legal success that solve problems using the utmost integrity, inspire and lead others, act as a role model and mentor, and are passionate about helping their clients, as well as, the wider community. The full 2018 class includes over 30 attorneys.

LaToya serves as the deputy practice coordinator of the labor and employment group in Phelps’ Jackson Office. Her labor and employment law practice consists of over 17 years of experience with a focus on Civil Rights, as well as discrimination and harassment claims against public and private entities. An important component of LaToya’s practice entails representing colleges and universities in suits alleging constitutional rights violations and matters before the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the U.S. Department of Labor. She also conducts diversity training and educational programs for numerous companies throughout the region and has trained hundreds of executives and managers on employment law and constitutional law issues.

Committed to her native city of Jackson, Mississippi, LaToya has been recognized by Jackson Public Schools (JPS) for her commitment to assist the district and its students and was honored as 2016 Parent of the Year at Davis Magnet IB World Elementary School (JPS). In recognition of her dedication to her church, her community and her profession, LaToya was recognized as the 2018 Woman of the Year by the Church of Christ (Hol.) U.S.A. Additionally, she has served as a mentor to JPS students since 2003 and was very proud to see two of her JPS mentees receive their college degrees.
