Phelps Adds John Duke to Guide Employers Through Complex Labor Relations
AUSTIN, Texas — Aug. 5, 2024 — Recent high-profile union wins and NLRB actions highlight trends in the South and nationwide surrounding organizing. In this market, private-sector employers need an experienced partner to build effective labor relations strategies. John Duke joins Phelps to help employers navigate union campaigns and collective bargaining efforts and resolve complex labor litigation.
“As a brief review of business news reflects, union organizing efforts focused on the historically non-union Southeast are accelerating,” said Reed Russell, leader of the firm’s regional labor and employment team. “Coupled with changes in the rules made by a more union-friendly NLRB, such as the ability to have quicker union elections, employers need skilled counsel with deep experience under the NLRA to guide them in this fast-developing area. John brings that knowledge, skill and experience and adds critical depth to our regional employment group.”
Board certified in labor and employment law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, John provides added strength and insight to the Phelps labor and employment team. His strategic presence in the firm’s Austin office benefits employers across the country as public opinion toward unionization and federal oversight evolve.
John works with employers to develop strategic options that ensure NLRA, federal law and state law compliance and protect business’s interests. He advises companies on lawful responses to union organizing efforts and develops negotiation plans and assesses contract costs for unionized employers. John also helps employers plan for and respond to strikes as well as to implement lockouts.
Employers in a range of industries turn to John’s two decades of experience trying labor law cases. He defends company management against employment claims and leads trial teams on labor law issues before the NLRB and in state and federal courts. His in-depth knowledge of major U.S. unions and labor litigation forums positions clients to effectively handle unfair practice cases, class actions and the full range of employment suits.
“Both unions and the NLRB have shown remarkable resilience and continue to evolve in response to legal, economic and social developments in ways that demand strategic and creative responses,” said John. “With its continued commitment to helping companies navigate the ever-changing landscape of labor law, I am thrilled to join the Phelps employment group.”
