Phelps Expands Insurance Practice in Carolinas
RALEIGH – Nearly everything we own, every business we walk into and every service we buy are protected by insurance. Phelps Dunbar is committed to serving this industry that has such broad impact.
Phelps reinforced its insurance practice with the hire of new Raleigh partner Tom Contois, a lawyer with more than 20 years experience representing insurance carriers in coverage and bad faith disputes.
“Tom’s addition furthers our long term objective to deepen and expand our insurance practice and reinforces our commitment in the Carolinas,” Phelps managing partner Marshall Redmon said.
After graduating from Duke for undergraduate and law school, Tom clerked at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit before beginning his practice with the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division in Washington, D.C. Tom transitioned to private practice at a national firm in D.C. before returning to North Carolina.
In his private practice, Tom has represented insurance carriers in multimillion-dollar claims stemming from hurricanes, earthquakes, soil movement, arson fire and the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Phelps’ expansion of its Raleigh office furthers the firm’s goal of becoming the preeminent firm in the Southern region of the United States. The move will allow the firm to more effectively serve clients who have needs throughout the state of North Carolina as well as South Carolina.
