Phelps Partner Ivan M. Rodriguez Represents Houston on Board of National Maritime Law Association
HOUSTON, Texas — May 24, 2022 — Phelps Partner Ivan M. Rodriguez was elected to the Board of Directors for The Maritime Law Association of the United States (MLA). He will help to lead the storied organization for a three-year term.
The MLA brings together admiralty lawyers, judges and law professors, as well as non-lawyers involved in the maritime sector. Everyone from stevedores to marine insurers to government agencies are represented in the association, united by their concern for the fair and efficient operation of all elements of the industry.
In addition to its affiliation with the American Bar Association, the MLA works closely with maritime groups around the world to develop international rules and create greater harmony in shipping laws and practices between nations.
Ivan has extensive experience assisting clients on matters arising in multiple jurisdictions, both domestic and international. He is managing partner of the firm’s Houston office and focuses his practice on helping clients in handling all types of claims and issues in the maritime sector, including complex commercial disputes, casualties and collisions, personal injuries and premises liability matters. As a native of Bogota, Colombia, he is fluent in both English and Spanish, and his bicultural background and language capabilities are invaluable in the maritime industry.
Already a Proctor in Admiralty with the association since 2015, Ivan’s new role opens opportunities to collaborate with the leading minds in the maritime industry while working to realize the goals of the association’s membership. Ivan is also an active member of the International Association of Defense Counsel, Claims and Litigation Management Alliance and Hispanic Bar Association of Houston.
