Phelps Picked for New Orleans CityBusiness “Empowering Women” List
NEW ORLEANS - Aug. 25, 2023 - Phelps was honored on New Orleans CityBusiness’ inaugural Empowering Women list. The publication recognizes companies and organizations that show a strong commitment to support and elevate women in the New Orleans area.
“New Orleans CityBusiness has over 40 years of history recognizing and honoring women leaders,” said Lisa Blossman, managing director at New Orleans CityBusiness. “We are excited to build on Women of the Year by launching Empowering Women to recognize organizations that invest in, elevate and support women leaders.”
Empowering Women is designed to showcase tangible and innovative efforts by for-profit companies to advance women in the workplace and community. Female partners across Phelps’ footprint lead many of its major practice groups, including insurance, employment and litigation. And 50% of Phelps’ associates are women, helping to steer the firm forward while building on its tradition of superior client service. The firm has earned recognition by MultiCultural Law Magazine in the Top 100 Law firms for Women for its high percentage of female partners.
Phelps earned a spot among the list’s honorees in part due to the firm’s focus on encouraging woman lawyers to develop their specific practice using firm resources. “Phelps has provided me ample opportunities to develop my nationwide insurance practice,” said Katherine Karam, practice coordinator for the New Orleans insurance group. “As a leader of the Insurance group, I have the opportunity to help build, support and manage a team of lawyers, paralegals and legal assistants who work together to provide excellent service to Phelps’ insurance clients.”
In addition to the programs the firm offers for professional success, Phelps accommodates all family situations through parental leave and flexible working schedules. “As a partner at the firm, I’m grateful that Phelps provides options that allow me to be present for my family while working to achieve my professional goals,” said labor and employment partner Rebecca Sha.
Phelps has a long history of women leading the charge in both the legal and local community, including New Orleans Vice-Managing Partner Kim Boyle. “In my role as Vice-Managing Partner, the firm has expanded my work with the civic and nonprofit groups on the front lines, helping to improve the quality of life for everyone in the City of New Orleans.”
