Phelps Solidifies Strength as Go-To White-Collar Firm With Addition of Shaun Clarke
NEW ORLEANS — May 19, 2022 — Phelps welcomes partner Shaun Clarke, a criminal and commercial trial lawyer with deep experience handling high-profile cases. His client was the only one to obtain dismissal of charges among the 55 individuals indicted in the “Varsity Blues” college admissions case. He obtained a not guilty verdict on behalf of the BP employee charged with causing the Gulf oil spill as well as a rare not guilty verdict in a criminal insider trading case. He successfully represented former N.Y. Yankee Chuck Knoblauch in the congressional investigation of steroids in baseball and Enron’s Vice-Chairman, the highest ranking company official against whom no charges were filed.
In addition to his white collar practice, Shaun defends high-stakes commercial claims, such as the multidistrict opioid litigation, False Claims Act cases and other “bet the company” litigation. He also represented Louisiana’s organ transplant centers and obtained an injunction that prevented the federal government from implementing an organ allocation scheme that would have disadvantaged Louisiana residents.
After building successful practices in Louisiana and Texas, Shaun returns home to New Orleans where he served in the U.S. Attorney’s Office. He will be resident in New Orleans but also active in Phelps’ Houston office.
“I recognized Shaun’s talent early on in his career and had the privilege of hiring him at the U.S. Attorney's Office,” said former U.S. Attorney and Senior Partner Harry Rosenberg. “I’m grateful for the chance to work side-by-side with him again, and I know his experience will add to the firm’s strong track record of white collar success.”
Shaun’s background gives him the insight to work with regulators or prosecutors on the front end to resolve investigations without the filing of civil or criminal charges.
“Phelps is the Gulf South’s premier team for handling high-stakes investigations and litigation,” said Shaun. “I’m thrilled to return home to New Orleans and to get to work on behalf of our Texas and Louisiana clients.”
