Phelps Dunbar LLP has brought on a seasoned trial lawyer and experienced business attorney as a partner to help expand the firm's reach and capabilities in Raleigh, North Carolina, with new practice groups as more companies move into the Tar Heel State.
Jonathan Hall comes to Phelps Dunbar from Parker Poe Adams & Bernstein LLP, and has a wide range of experience in multiple practice areas under the business law umbrella.
His recent work includes leading a trial team for Trindent Consulting International Inc. for a contract case brought against it by life sciences firm Bioventus LLC during the COVID-19 pandemic that wound up being the Middle District of North Carolina's first fully-remote bench trial.
Hall told Law360 on Wednesday that he was attracted to the opportunity to grow his practice's "footprint."
"Phelps, they've done the hard part, which is coming to Raleigh-Durham," Hall said. "Now it's just a matter of taking advantage of this growth market, especially in the legal community. And that's a challenge for me that I felt like it was just too good to turn down."
Hall said that with 30 years of experience in Raleigh, he is equipped and excited to help build out Phelps Dunbar's presence in the area. Hall is a partner with the firm's business litigation group and says he intends to continue trying cases while also using his wealth of experience as a resource for Phelps Dunbar at large.
He has worked in multiple areas of law, including product liability, land use, energy, employment and others. Hall told Law360 that his knowledge of those different industries will allow him to "speak the language" for multiple new teams he intends to help create within Phelps Dunbar's business litigation practice.
Recently, Hall won a land use case for a woman whom Currituck County told to tear down her home in the Outer Banks, securing a trial-level victory allowing her to keep her home that is currently being argued at the Fourth Circuit. Hall said that case was a proud success for his practice and that he intends to continue pursuing similar land use cases at Phelps Dunbar.
All of Hall's clients from his former firm are following him to Phelps Dunbar, he told Law360, adding that he is "very humbled by the loyalty" that they have demonstrated.
Hall got his bachelor's degree in political science from the University of North Carolina, where he was also a quarterback on the school's football team. He earned his law degree from the Wake Forest University School of Law.
Phelps Dunbar has 13 office locations in the United States and the United Kingdom with more than 370 attorneys on its roster.
